Appropriate discipline

The respondents’ views about appropriate discipline varied greatly across the scenarios. On the one hand, about one-half of the respondents thought that no discipline or only a verbal reprimand would be appropriate in connection with three scenarios (Scenario 1: Acceptance of gratuities; Scenario 7: Verbal abuse; Scenario 14: Failure to react to graffiti), evaluated among the least serious (Table 5.11). On the other hand, about one-half or close to one-half of respondents thought that a SAPS officer who engaged in the behavior described in the scenario should be dismissed in connection with three scenarios (Scenario 3: Theft of knife; Scenario 4: Abuse of deadly force; Scenario 13: Bribe from reckless motorist). Viewed differently, in most scenarios, the respondents expected some discipline, more serious than a verbal reprimand and less serious than dismissal (Table 5.11).
